Learning a new language is a distinct journey for everyone. Some individuals grasp a new language with ease, while for others, it might be a long haul spanning several years. The inspiration to acquire a foreign language may only surface at a certain stage in life, typically triggered by a shift in career requirements or a change in one’s residential country.

 Undeniably, the acquisition of a foreign language, with particular emphasis on English, the global lingua franca, can pave the way for professional growth, personal development, or an enhanced quality of life. Consequently, an increasing number of adults are venturing into English lessons.

Where to begin?

 This question dates back to the era of the ancient Romans. Their response was – ‘ab ovo,’ or in other words, start from scratch! For adults who have a smattering of English from their younger years, it’s recommended to assess their current language proficiency before embarking on their learning journey.

 A combination of written and oral evaluation, preferably under the guidance of an experienced English tutor, would shed light on what they recollect, their language aptitude, and possibly, their detrimental learning habits. This preliminary evaluation will also provide a reference point to determine the starting level of their lessons – from basic to pre-intermediate English. Irrespective of the level, revisiting the cornerstones of the language – grammar, tenses, vocabulary, and phrases – is imperative.

 On the contrary, the landscape is quite different for adults starting their English learning voyage from scratch. They would need to decide between group classes and individual lessons, as this choice hinges largely on their personality, learning style, and psychological comfort.

Taking baby steps towards English proficiency

 Adult learners resuming English lessons after a long hiatus might find it daunting. Therefore, learning English should be a structured process, with each segment learnt and mastered before proceeding to the next. Avoid biting off more than you can chew!

Every stage of life comes with its unique set of allure and challenges. As we age, our learning pace tends to slow down due to natural aging processes or neurological complications. Hence, lessons need to be spaced out optimally. Learning is more effective when it’s done more frequently in shorter time intervals.

Unlike young learners, there’s no age barrier when teaching English to older individuals. This understanding must be factored in by both the tutor and the learner. Fostering an environment of mutual respect and openness is key to a fruitful learning relationship.

Psychology significantly influences the learning process. A conducive learning atmosphere, a positive mindset, and unwavering motivation are the stepping stones to linguistic triumph. The belief that no goal is unattainable can drive adult learners to learn English successfully. This stems from their strong motivation to achieve their pre-set objectives, which propels them forward regardless of the challenges they might encounter on their learning journey.
